Wine of the Week | Vía Romana 1999 [Red] The Ribeira Sacra region in northwest Spain is a recent addition to the country's officially denominated regions. Unlike the better known Rías Baixas region closer to the coast where red grapes just don't ripen, this area upstream along the rivers Miño and Sil, offers some first rate reds using the local Mencía variety. A young unoaked wine is nice on its own and should go well with veal, pork and rice dishes. Dark garnet/purple color with a bluish edge. Elegant fruit and floral nose [blackberry] and a pleasant herbal touch of fresh cut hay. Blackberry/raspberry fruit dominates the palate: medium bodied with fresh crisp acidity, nice complexity and great length. [$L] |
