Wine of the Week | Contino Reserva 2001 [Red] It's clear that 2001 was a good year for Riojas. All in all the vintage was probably a bit over-hyped, but this Contino Reserva is superb. A typical Rioja blend of tempranillo (85%), graciano (10%) and mazuelo (5%); it's good on its own and will go especially well with beef and lamb. Excellent. Beautiful deep, dark cherry red color. Nicely complex on the nose with ample cherry/berry fruit, subtle spiciness of toasted oak with, a touch of leather, and a scent of dryed hay and herbs (tea leaves). Full bodied yet elegant on the palate with plenty of fruit flavors (blueberry) and spice. Smooth, balanced with good acidity and tremendous length. [$H] |
