Wine of the Week

Fino Gran Barquero [Fortified]
Producer: Pérez Barquero
Region: DO Montilla-Moriles

100% pedro ximénez grapes grown on "albariza" (chalk soil) parcels in Sierra de Montilla and Moriles Altos. Nourished under flor for 8-10 years in American oak sherry butts.

Dry herbs/flowers/straw, almonds, a hint of fruit (dried apricots), old wood (antique shop aromas).
Clean/fresh with nuts & dehydrated fruit, beeswax/old wood, chalky/saline minerality, creamy mouth feel. An excellent fino, great with shellfish/oysters. A keeper and a personal favorite.

Montilla-Moriles wines are made with the local pedro ximénez grapes in the sherry-style, but cannot be called "sherry" as only wines from Jerez can use that descriptor.

A note to our readers:
I've used SRP, which is the normal price in Spain expressed in US dollars [Low=$5-9, Medium=$10-18, High=$19+]. The wines selected are usually moderately priced and generally exported around the world. Some exceptions happen...
