Wine of the Week | Allende 1998 [Red] Made by winemaker Miguel Angel de Gregorio, who has built up a sterling reputation in recent years, this oak-aged red is an excellent example of the new-generation Riojas. It's got color, body, fruit, flavor; and it's a good match for roast beef or prime rib. Excellent. Medium dark cherry/garnate color with a purple tint. Rich ripe fruit nose shows plums and berries, accompanied by vanilla/spice, chocolate with an interesting predominance of tertiary cigar box and leather aromas. Rich full-bodied palate with cherry/berry fruit and [again] lots of leathery tertiary sensations. Good length, smooth tannins and ready to drink. [$M] |
