Wine of the Week

Vinsacro Dioro Selección 2017 [Red]
Producer: Bodegas Escudero
Region: DOC Rioja

A "vidau" blend of old vines grapes from the Cuesta de la Reina vineyard on Monte Yerga, mostly garnacha with tempranillo, mazuelo & others. Hand selected, chilled to 6ºC, 30 days fermenting & macerating on the skins, nurtured 17 months in oak barrels.

Rich sweet fruit (black & blueberries), spice: nutmeg, vanilla and cardamom.
Bright & fresh on the palate with ample fruit, spice, a touch of chocolate and smooth/polished tannins. Drinking well, but still very young. A couple of years in the cellar could take it to a whole new level. That said, an excellent wine.

"Vidau" vineyards were the standard in Rioja in the old days, multiple grape varieties planted together, then harvested at the same time & co-fermented. Today Escudero picks, ferments & nurtures the individual varieties separately, then puts them together in the final blend.

A note to our readers:
I've used SRP, which is the normal price in Spain expressed in US dollars [Low=$5-9, Medium=$10-18, High=$19+]. The wines selected are usually moderately priced and generally exported around the world. Some exceptions happen...
