Wine of the Week | Viņa Ardanza 2012 [Red] Just released, 78% tempranillo, 22% garnacha. Aged in used American oak barrels (tempranillo 36 months, garnacha 30 months), bottled in 2016. A classic blend for this Rioja classic. Outstanding. Medium dark ruby red color, ripe berry fruit (blueberry, blackberry, cherry), subtle wood-spice aromas (cardamom, nutmeg, allspice). Fresh and juicy on the palate, bramble berry fruit, smooth sweet tannins, and a rich, rose petal scented follow through. This is a wine to keep and let grow in the cellar, but I couldn't resist cracking the bottle. Last year had the good fortune to taste 11 older vintages, dating back to 1985, all showed well, some outstanding (*2001, *2009, *2010). A keeper. [$H] |
