Wine of the Week | Luis Caņas Reserva 2013 [Red] 95% tempranillo, 5% graciano. Barrel aged for 18 months in a mix of French and American oak barrels. Dark berry fruit up front (blueberry/blackberry) with a hint of smoke & spice (nutmeg/cardamom) and thyme. Nice dark cherry red color. Hearty, yet smooth and elegant on the palate, lively polished tannins, long with great balance. Serious stuff. Excellent. Located in the Rioja Alavesa sub-region, Luis Caņas has been a personal favorite since coming to Spain almost 40 years ago. In the early days, the wines were good, but rustic in style; today they make refined, elegant wines without losing their sense of place. [$H] |
