Wine of the Week | Torre de Oņa Reserva 2009 [Red] Always an attention getter, this estate bottled wine from La Rioja Alta's Torre de Oņa winery in Rioja Alavesa is well worth a try. Mainly Tempranillo (95%), aged 20 minths in oak barrels (70% French, 30% other). An excellent wine, that will certainly improve with cellaring. A bit closed at first, but opens nicely in the glass. Initially showing a whiff of smoke & spice, the nose grows in intensity and complexity with vanilla, chocolate, blueberries & blackberries. On the palate, the same dark berry fruit, chocolate & spice combine with firm yet smooth tannins. The oak remains in the background with a pleasantly mineral finish. [$M] |
