Wine of the Week | Pago de Santa Cruz 1998 [Red] Tinto fino [Tempranillo] grapes from 60+ year-old vine in the Pago de Santa Cruz vineyard are used to make this special, limited production Ribera del Duero from Viña Sastre. After vinification, the wine is barrel aged for 16 months to produce a wondeful, silky smooth red. Just the thing for a roast rack of lamb. Bright cherry-garnet red color. Somewhat closed in the nose, but showing elegance and great complexity: ripe cherry/berry fruit, eucalyptus/mint, almost peppery spice along with dry straw flowers. Potent yet silky palate echoes the nose with crisp acidity, firm/smooth tannins and superb length. Excellent. [$H] |
